About Glatt
About Glatt
A short history of the Glatt
In 1960 there were local shops everywhere and department stores in the cities of Switzerland, but not a single shopping center. Not even the word for it existed. But a role model: the shopping malls in the USA.

This is why Migros Genossenschafts-Bund (MGB), Globus and Jelmoli joined forces and agreed to build and operate a “shopping city” together. In 1962, the AG Einkaufszentrum Glatt-Zürich was officially listed in the Zurich Commercial Register.
The location of choice was Wallisellen – one factor being the “Autobahn 1”, which had not yet been built at the time but was already planned. In 1971, the bulldozers started digging, and in just four years of construction, the idyllic suburban community was provided with a shopping center including a multi-level parking garage, gas station and a high-rise office building. On 13 February 1975, “the Glatt”, as visitors soon called it, celebrated its opening. A short time later, the new bus line 94 added a stop directly in front of the entrance.
The Glatt – always on the move
Since the founding days, the Glatt has been rebuilt several times and extensively modernized in 1992. The community of tenants also grew and changed constantly: Today, the 42,000 square meters of retail space are home to 14 restaurants and 90 shops, including various traditional Swiss brands and international top brands – the Apple Store at Glatt was the very first in Switzerland.
Later, a medical specialist center was established, including gynecology, dentistry and psychotherapy. Throughout the year, Glatt hosts events featuring stars from the worlds of literature, fashion and social media.
With all these assets, Glatt has become the shopping center with the highest turnover in Switzerland, and more than lives up to its original name of “shopping city”. Around 9 million people come here every year to shop, eat, meet people, for dental care and preventative check-ups. They benefit from perfect public transport connections (as of 2010, the tram line 12 also stops at Glatt) – and 4,500 free parking spaces.
The interests of the Glatt community are well represented
While owner Livit AG manages the Glatt, Interessengemeinschaft Zentrum Glatt AG (IG Glatt) takes care of the interests of the tenants, as the name suggests. Advertising, events, public relations are all part of the scope of responsibility. Whenever Glatt is advertised somewhere, it is a joint venture of Livit AG and IG Glatt – as is this website.
We look forward to your visit!
Sincerely, Reto Waidacher, President of the Board of Directors of Interessengemeinschaft Zentrum Glatt AG
